Leon Leonwood Bean started the first L.L. Bean shop in his brother's basement in Freeport, Maine. He sold the "Bean Boot", a waterproof boot for fishermen.

L.L.Bean is named after Leon Leonwood Bean. It was founded in 1812 and the first store was opened in Freeport, Maine.
