About Mobio
Mobio makes mobile lifestyle applications for 18-34 year-old consumers.
The company was founded in Menlo Park, California in 2005 and to-date has raised $9M from investors including InterWest Partners and Storm Ventures.
The board and management team collectively bring deep experience in mobile communications, telecom, consumer wireless, web services and enterprise software.
The company’s mission is to enable the creation of an entirely new archetype of information-rich mobile content. Customers don’t need or want to take the “whole web” with them while mobile. Instead, they want to carry with them only those bits of the web that is relevant for them given their specific tastes, interests, geography, as well as the task they are trying to accomplish at a particular moment in time. Mobio applications leverage web services and the most recent advances in service-oriented architecture to deliver just these “tasty bits” of the web. Our approach to application development and delivery is unique to Mobio and drives positive word of mouth and repeat usage.
The real story, less fluff and more concrete info
Mobio makes GetMobio, the first mobile lifestyle portal that offers consumers over 100 dynamic applications and widgets that work together and are based on mash ups of web services. Based in Cupertino, Calif., the company’s mission is to make data services that are fun, simple, and useful enough to merit everyday use on popular mobile phones. Use GetMobio from your mobile phone to find the hottest night clubs, call a cab, find alternative flights, book a table at the latest restaurants, or reserve tee times—in 3-clicks or less with no or minimal data entry. We deliver an end user experience that feels different, as if we "know" the end user and can anticipate their needs. We do this by sharing context across the various applications and widgets. Much of the content and all of the applications provided here are exclusive to Mobio.
Products
The GetMobio lifestyle portal ships with 10 collections that range from "After Midnight" to "Outwitting the Kids". Each collection is a set of applications, widgets, and subscriptions (RSS feeds) designed to allow end users to get the most out of of their busy lives while mobile. Customers can use these mobile collections “as is” or create their own to better meet their needs. Creating a new mobile collection is no more difficult than creating a new playlist for a music player such as the iPod. Featured applications within the GetMobio lifestyle portal include OpenTable Mobile, Mobile Movie Times, Mobile Flight Times, and GolfNow Mobile.
Examples
OpenTable Mobile is a Mobile 2.0 mash up that enables customers who subscribe to the fine dining reservation service OpenTable, to make restaurant reservations on the go and access existing reservations while mobile. With OpenTable Mobile you can book a table for two in three clicks, get directions to that restaurant, and send the reservation details to a friend over SMS - all in three clicks or less with no or minimal data entry.
Mobile Movie Times is a Mobile 2.0 mash-up application of web services, including movie listings, reviews, maps, ratings and ticket transactions. Mobile users can find a movie and buy a ticket in three clicks or less. They receive instant access to movies based on dozens of preferences, such as genre, location or rating. Currently, Universal Pictures is the exclusive sponsor of Mobile Movie Times.
Market
The most popular mobile phones are thin- and light- camera phones like the Motorola RAZR. In 2006, these phones cost $399. Today, a more powerful version of this phone can be had for $0-$50 depending on your carrier. Clearly the hardware has “gone commodity.” With commodity hardware comes the need for compelling software, to pull through additional sources of demand and to beef up razor-thin margins throughout the mobile ecosystem. The mobile space is crippled by a lack of compelling content. On popular phones, most mobile games are purchased once and played exactly once. Today, less than 20 million of the 200M people in the US who carry web-enabled mobile phones surf the mobile web regularly. Why? The experience is frustrating. And there is a stunning lack of compelling content and usable applications. Users don’t need or want to take the “whole web” with them when they’re on the go. Instead, they want to carry with them only those bits that are task specific and customized to their tastes, interests, and geographies: what we call the “tasty bits”. Mobio is the only company in the mobile content space providing the platform and applications needed to deliver tasty bits as a data service that can be consumed by millions of people on all kinds of popular phone models.
