Tea Party Turnout May Hinge on Success of Freedomworks.org Network

A grassroots movement that started with a small group of cities has evolved into a nation-wide phenomenon.

The modern day Tea Party Protesters are expected to gather at Town Halls in 300 cities in all 50 states.Several cities, including St. Louis, Cincinnati and Orlando already hosted tea parties, but leaders saw April 15 as the ideal date to launch a widespread effort to denounce the tax code, stimulus plan and federal budget. Groups developed their party plans and mapped hundreds of party locations via the freedomworks.org site and social networks.

(I noticed freedomworks was down earlier today.)
Today's protests are a culmination of parties- literally and figuratively. The movement's base isn't exclusive to a particularly organization, rather a group of organizations, including FairTax, the Constitution Party and Americans for Tax Reform, (also known as ATR). The remarkable growth rate of the movment was highlighted by Glenn Harlan Reynolds' article Wall Street Journal, Tax Day Becomes Protest Day.
Though critics will probably try to write the tea parties off as partisan publicity stunts, they're really a post-partisan expression of outrage. What's most striking about the tea-party movement is that most of the organizers haven't ever organized, or even participated, in a protest rally before. General disgust has drawn a lot of people off the sidelines and into the political arena, and they are already planning for political action after today.

This is not a "movement". It is a Fox News/Dick Armey co sponsored anti Obama rally. None of these people are going to pay more taxes. They are pawns of the richest 1%. It's quite sad. Where were these people when Bush was causing a huge deficit?

You are clearly missing the point. Redistribution of wealth is SOCIALISM. The greatness of this country is that each individual has every oppurtunity of financially advance themselves if they WORK HARD. It is called CAPITALISM. By definition, that means private individuals and corporations produce, and distribute wealth in this country NOT big government. If you take that away, you take away incentive to take risks, invent, succeed big and yes..even fail. Through failure, many lessons have been learned and many successes have resulted from that learning. If you want socialism, go somewhere else. This is still America even if you liberals are trying to destroy it.

What was probably the icing on the cake for the tea parties was when Rick Perry, Texas' governor stated that Texas can secede from the union. That will draw a lot of attention but more importantly it sends the message that these movements are serious for such strong words to be used. While the media will say they Texas does not have the right to do this outright (there are some court cases which agree, there are certain paths they can take to get this goal).
While they do not have the right to do this outright, there are certain paths they can take to get this goal. Come on, you know this is possible because this is the same country which gives exceptions to tax cheats through cleaver legal
maneuvers.
Really it is just using the legal system creatively.
Texas probably has the best chance at success. Here is just one way how it can work. The annexation agreement made when Texas joined the union provided that Texas would be able to divide into 5 states. This would create 8 more conservative Senators.
If Texas were to try to divide and be rebuffed, the US would be in violation of the agreement and Texas should be able to go free.
It is not all that far fetched.
Regardless of the TX situation, the movement was larger than expected. And it is just a start because the thing about grass roots is that it will only take hold, grow and spread.

The TEA Parties are a thorn in the liberals sides, and Less Taxation; message is only getting louder and more serious. It will be an interesting four years watching the liberals discredit conservatives as they squirm. Obama was a mistake and is a wake up call to real America.

This was by no means anti President Obama, not was it anymore anti Government than when our forefathers found the need to draw attention to the tax situation in the colonies. If the British had listened, there may have been no need for a revolution. Hopefully our Government will pay attention and listen to the message. This money you are throwing around was earned by the people of this country. Spend what you have been given as if it were coming from your own pockets.

Whether this is partisan politics or not shouldn't be the issue. That's what the American political system is all about. People have a voice and as long as they feel they can make a difference, they will speak out, demonstrate, protest and attempt to force change as is their constitutional right, as long as they do so peacefully.
I think it more than fair to suggest that this is a campaign against the President and his policies. I think it is also fair to say that many if not most of the people involved are the ones who voted against this President, but it must also be said that had the President ran his campaign with complete transparency and fully informed the American people of his ideology and intentions, these rallies would have taken place last fall and we'd either have a different President or at the very least, this one would have learned that you can't walk away from an election with a mandate that's based on anything other than full disclosure.
