What does the NFL Combine have in Common with SEO?

Every year, the NFL combine creates conversation for football fans in desperate need of new material to debate before the next season. For the unaquainted, the NFL combine is a physical evaluation of the nation's best players who declared for the NFL Draft. Coaches, general managers and fans watch the individual workouts, discuss the team needs and consider the pros and cons of each individual.
With as much attention as the combine receives, you'd figure the test results to be an accurate indication of the player's chance for success in the NFL. However, a great performance on a practice field, a solid time in the 40-yard dash and a strong arm doesn't always translate to on-field success.
Case in point, Kyle Boller. In 2003, the Baltimore Ravens used their first round pick on the quarterback from California. Boller was barely on the scouts' radar when he entered the combine, but he dramatically raised his stock with an imressive performance in the throwing drills. Since his first season, Boller has played average at best, with 45 touchdowns to 44 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 71.9.
So what does this have to do with Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? In the NFL combine, and in SEO, you may be dissapointed with the results if you focus too heavily in one area. Boller had great arm strength, but so did Jeff George. Sure, it helps to have a strong arm if you want to be a great quarterback, but there's also those attributes that aren't apparent in a short, individual workout, such as leadership, mental strength and poise under pressure. ]
You can't expect great results if you're only checking one or two items on a long list of qualifications. If you hyperfocus on keywords and neglect to tweak other areas and utilize social networks and backlinks, you'll dwell in mediocrity.
