Adobe Flash Player for iPhone? Don't hold your breath.

flash player

In the wake of Bloomberg's report that Adobe and Apple are colloborating to develop an iPhone flash player, many users, myself included, are wondering if they'll check another item off our wish list.
According to Bloomberg, Adobe's player is installed on 98% of the worlds PCs and the software is available on 800 million handsets, but not the iPhone. Steve Jobs pinned the blame on Adobe and claimed Flash player is too slow for Apple's popular device.

Adobe's CEO, Shantanu Narayen, told Bloomberg that the Apple project could prove to be worth the risk during these dangerous economic times.

It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating. The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver. In the short run, there’s limited visibility in technology spending/ But when we look at the macro spending, we think tech spend will be one of the ways we get out of this funk.

My question: If Apple and Steve Jobs are considered visionary leaders in the tech world, why wasn't this a top priority during 3G iPhone' development? I guess they were too busy developing a smaller iPod shuffle with boring features.

(86) Thoughts on Adobe Flash Player for iPhone? Don't hold your breath.

I agree, this is getting ridiculous. I'd even pay for the application. It would be worth it! I want my southpark episodes at the airport dammit!

Is this yet another case of trying to be so exclusive that nobody will end up wanting it (the iphone) apart from the die hard set. Talk about missing great opportunities. This is either a cunning plan to eek out the longevity of the phone - give us what we want drip feed style or... Jobs and co have made a massive error in understanding their customers. Give us the programmes we need/want Steve and stop messing about, we fans not servants!

Comments by Mike chantry : Monday, March 09, 2009 at 03:00 PM

So there isn't anything yet on the flash player issue. I can't believe so many great computer geeks and they can't give us what we want I am missing my fav. Shows... Damn it!!!

Comments by rick : Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 03:14 AM

This is ridiculous, there are newly released movies online that I could be watching anywhere anytime, I don't quite understand why this has to be such a big dobacle... I mean it is now the middle of March '09 and still no Flash progress, big bummer!

This is an essential feature on iPhone

I JUST got my iPhone 6 days ago, was SO excited and then sat n the car outside the AT&T store with my
mouth hanging open like an idiot because flash player wouldn't download. Obviously I'm grossly uninformed but inhad no idea it would b a problem. I GOT this phone so that I could get n 2 my flash apps all day every day.

Apparently I am an idiot and the people claiming they r working round the clock to make this happen aren't as bright as I want them to be either.

Comments by Stephanie Dolan : Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 10:58 AM

well this just sealed the deal. I was wanting to buy an iPhone until I confirmed that Flash wouldn't work on it.

Flash is a MUST HAVE for me on an iPhone. Does the BB Bold run Flash?
I will look into that now...

What the HELL.. The iPhone can record upcoming tv shows on my tv and can calculate my caloric intake but it can't download flash, THAT SUCKS ASS!!

Comments by Poe-Poe : Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 11:48 PM

I recently bought an I phone just taking for granted that I could view flash player videos. How dumb am I? Well 36 hrs later I took that thing back and got to pay a 10% restocking fee.I figured better that than paying 30 bucks a month for 3G service that I can"t view half the stuff on. They ought to call it 1.5G !!!!!!!

As a mature and somewhat enthusiastic user of iPhone, I, too, am flabbergasted that Apple & Adobe cannot get Flash Player on the iPhone. So much of my web time is spent on the road, waiting for flights. Why do I have to pull out my laptop, pay for a wireless internet connection just to play a 40 second movie link from an e-mail?
Come on, Apple, Adobe, be responsive to your customers.

Comments by Larry : Thursday, April 02, 2009 at 09:14 AM

this is the most redicullous issue i have ever heard so damn excited and up to date technology we have now days and these bunch of cold ass suits can't make the freagin' call and give us the flash player c'mon morons i spent my money on this device and you can't give us what we want... if so this will be the last time I spent my money on you.... it is so pathetic...

Comments by rick : Saturday, April 04, 2009 at 01:47 AM

Are you guys kidding me? What a bunch of whiney babies! You have a cutting edge phone that is still young. They are improving the technology at a fast pace, but you ungrateful whiners complain because you can't watch your tv shows? It's a cellphone, one that can go way beyond the technology before it, but still a cellphone. They are working on it, until then, get a life.

It's packAged as a web browser/phone so really flash should be a given

I'll wait for apple to accept/create a
flash player. I love this phone and it rocks. I think I can find other features on it to entertain me, meanwhile.

I have told all I know not to get an iphone because of the flash issue. It is a problem for me everyday. Travel alot and the iphone is useful in a limited way. Phone fine...some emails come through and some don't. PLEASE fix this issue soon or I am back to my blackberry full time that I am perfectly happy with.

just got iphone i thought it was going to be great until i tried to get MLB on it to check games . sent me to adobe flash page to install but safari can't download.
i thought i was doing something wrong turns out we bought the wrong phone can't belive the salesmen let that detail out. hope apple / adobe can get togather on this

Comments by gm : Sunday, April 12, 2009 at 07:28 PM

I have had both generations of the iphone and I have had enough walked into the AT7T store today and said "I need a new phone I have had enough of the iphone." The salesman stood there in shock. he couldn't believe it, then I told him why "it is just to damn proprietary for me." "I need flash, I need word, and most of all I need a phone that turns on when I press the button." The newest problem I am experiencing the phone wont turn on sometimes taken it to Apple store whenever I am in a town that has one and they all say the phone works fine. Of course it does when it is in the store. So I asked the salesmen what phone he had "The Blackberry Bold." he responded. Of course you do.

I would love to have Flash for various reasons, but you people should hear yourselves. Your iPhone is capable of so many things, yet you bitch about something it doesn't do. Be happy you even have a phone to begin with and quit your bitching.

Do you REALLY "NEED" to see your TV shows on your phone? Maybe you should get your fat butts outside and do something productive, like living.

Comments by dave : Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 03:16 PM

I love Apple's response to their short comings. Flash is not a new technology...Come on! Stop the block and allow us to download Flash to our iPhones! We pay enough for the phone, monthly service, and apps!!!

Comments by Angelica Sweet : Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 03:57 PM

At least we have youtube!

Comments by Thomas : Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 04:49 PM

As much as I would love flash player to be released on iPhone, the commonly agreed standard for mobile video is MP4 wrapper with h264 codec - which the iPhone already reads, and which is a non proprietary standard.
It can also be progressively-downloaded (streamed) using http, so if this is for video only, flash player is pretty much useless. Only use I see for it with video is bringing overlay functionalities, preroll or postroll interactivity, but I guess objective-c/cocoa already does it.

I'm pretty miffed. My new iphone seems to be lacking one crucial piece of a very beautiful puzzle. I hope to be able to install flash and use everything requiring it soon - then and only then will I be able to say "I'm truly living in the future".

Comments by James : Friday, April 17, 2009 at 09:46 PM

This is a joke. You all have a product that is a phone, camera, gps, pda and an iPod, for much less than you would pay if you bought each item individually. So it does not have flash. Maybe you should write to all the website and tv shows and tell them to put the videos or shows into mp4 format. The iPhone is the best phone I have ever had.

Comments by Erik : Monday, April 20, 2009 at 11:38 AM

First off, you guys whin a lot. I got my iPhone about 3 months ago after long following it and not wanting to wait longer. 6 months ago. I hated apple. I wanted microsoft to come out with something new to beat it. However. The iPhone is awesome. True. It lacks a lot. I'd like a batter battery. But you can't have it all. Hopefully they are working on flash for the iphone. I'm willing to wait. Personally I'm more worried about apple allowing it. If you don't like apple doing what they do. Go get a new phone. Apple has more than just phones on their mind. As other companies close in. Hopefully they will lighten up and come up with even more. Like the palm pre. It's a good phone. But people compair it to the iPhone 3G. Which is what apple had over two years ago. Not that I like apple. But doesn't seem to be the company to play with itself once it's on top. They seem to get there and own it. If they come out with a new iPhone this summer. If apple is smart. I think it'd be a big jump while making the battery life a bit more. This would allow for your flash to be more likly. If you think it's easy. Go do it yourself. You complain that a bunch of people can't get it. Well. Quit whinning like you are 7 wanting candy and do it yourself

Comments by Sean : Monday, April 20, 2009 at 12:08 PM

Wow,I was so excited for the phone too. And yes, when I'm traveling it's nice to have something entertaining. You think adobe would have thought of flash player as soon as the iPhone came out. But I think they waited for people like us to complain.

Hey if your iPhone won't turn on try taking it out of the nice little case you bought for it. I found I had that problem also. I have never had a phone as advanced as my iPhone. Thanks Apple! Hey and for everyone else, there's probably a reason for the wait on the flash. Although the camera zoom would be cool. I don't have the 3G yet. Thanks again.

Comments by HACK! : Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Honestly for those of you who call these people whinney bitches you need to think of certain things first. 1 the iPhone cost about a little over $500 without a plan. 2 with a plan it cost about $300. They advertise it as great technology but it's getting it's ass kicked by cheaper phones so why don't these people have the right to bitch? You save your money for something nice and advance but when the guy next to you only paid $100 for his touch phone that sends pictures through texting and yours can't do that. His can download flashplaye, yours can't. I'm not saying I don't like my iPhone but for something so exspensive it should knockout the cheaper phones by a landslide but it doesn't.

So these customers should be able to demand for better when they paid so much. They shouldn't have to be degraded by ass holes who probably got the phone from their daddy's.

I too didn't realize this was lacking when I bought my iPhone. The most disturbing part is how long Apple has been claiming to work on a solution but no fix yet. I love the rest of the phone, but this is a major limitation. This should be a TOP priority now. I also have trouble downloading 2 of my email accts in certain locations when I am able to get email for the third acct. Very odd.

it's actually a lot harder to get flash player to work on the iphone than you think. the firmware and the flash player are completely incompatible, and to make a flash player that was compatible, and still worked with all the videos online...

I can't believe this! 2009 and I can't have Flash. Many sites are in flash now. As a photographer I wanted to show some of my work to my clients on my new iPhone and what do I get? a big slap in the face from Safari. I feel like I just traveled back 10 years, well at least I can level my camera with my phone!

Comments by Json : Wednesday, May 06, 2009 at 12:22 PM

I just bought my iPhone and commuted to a 2 year contract. I am extremely disappointed that I can view flash content. Flash is much more than a video player. It's for rich Internet applications. I should know, I create them. My website is completely flash.

Adobe, you had better get your shit together and soon. Microsoft is pit to kill you and your products. If you think they just want to kill Apple, your making a big mistake. Get in bed with Apple and do it now. Flash is critical. VERY TICKED OFF!

Comments by BW : Friday, May 08, 2009 at 11:35 PM

All I have to say about this is, tit for tat bitches! There is always going to be a phone with different, better or worse features. It is so completely selfish and ignorant to demand absolute perfection out of people. Some of you sound like spoiled rotten, sniveling little children, stomping your feet because you got a carrot instead of a Klondike bar!. I researched every little detail about this phone and compared with many different kinds before I spent the $300 dollars, reading reviews and asking people questions ensuring that this was the phone for me. This is why I am not disappointed. So go on! Piss and moan, but please children, do it quietly, I'm trying to play with my new iPhone!

I work for a geographical information systems company in Missouri and I was really looking forward to using my new Iphone to check out our new software program that we are releasing for counties to use and come to find out Flash Player is needed. I went through 4 battery life cycles messing with trying to download it until I read this today. This is very unfortunate, because our company was planning on creating a GIS app for the Iphone. I guess I'll have to break the bad news to the boss.

Id be willing to pay for an app all i want is to watch family guy while im on the road, is that so much to ask?

Comments by Nick : Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 02:30 PM

No Flash on the new iPhone 3.0, as I'm using it right now. So what?! I certainly understand the challenges that developers from Apple and Adobe face:
- Flash is too "heavy" - sorry, no fat chicks:) Flash will chew up your iPhone battery so fast, that your next post here will be about you, crying, that iPhone needs a better battery.
- Flash is too slow. Sure, on your Pentium 3 and newer processors, it seems like Flash is flawless. But put it on Pentium or Pentium II, and pray, because it will take forever to process. You have an iPhone, with a slower processor than your PC. And again, you will cry to Apple, that iPhone needs a better processor.
- Flash is an accessory, not necessity. I want to watch videos at Hulu too, but I don't blame Apple or Adobe - I blame Hulu. How come they can't make 2nd version of their site that is Flash free?!
- Flash is a floating-point. Ever wonder, how come you can zoom in a flash website up to 2000%, but can't do that with regular HTML/JavaScript websites?! Because Flash uses floating point values and variables that big enough to do that, and iPhone's main memory (128Mb) is not big enough.
- Flash is for mouse and keyboard, not "touch". Sure, the touch emulates the mouse click. But that's it. Many flash games require you to press keyboard keys, and even though iPhone has a keyboard, it's for typing, not playing. And even if the game or app in Flash is developed for mouse clicks, it will be impractical (making us to tap crazy on the screen). Remember - Accelerometer that we use to as control in our games, will be useless on Flash web-sites, because instead of moving left or right, the Safari will just switch from portrait into landscape - so much for gaming.
- Flash will eat your kids. Well, it won't. But you at least need to understand the limits of the iPhone. You can run neither Photoshop on the iPhone, nor Halo. It's a smartphone first, and a toy - second. You need a phone that can take pictures, edit them and send to your friends?! - iPhone is the answer. But if you need a new kidney - Go to Mexico. Same truth holds for Flash.

So remember, before you buy or complain, consider the limits. We are still "Li-ion battery" equipped "gadget freaks", and all portable devices will be limited to the battery, cooling, capacity and economy.

Comments by Don : Saturday, June 06, 2009 at 03:28 PM

There's no two ways about it--Flash/Flex rules! and because Apple makes using products and systems a great deal simplistic ,everything from Adobe is pretty much the same line. I also agree that even though comments point out iPhone system resources; PalmPre and others use it anyway. It is such a great deal systematic and easier to Produce with Adobe too(Adobe &Apple would seem like a good fit.)

I too am disapointed with the iPhones shortcomings. I still do not know why I didn't take it back for the LG Vu at a savings of $150 and additional savings of $15 a month in data fees. It's ridiculus to pay so much for less. Please hurry with the updates, because I think the iPhone is great except for what all other phones of it's class aren't lacking.

Comments by Steve : Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 10:04 PM

If you jailbreak your iphone you can use a third party flash player.... Thats what i do... It even has a browser for myspace and sites like that, which you need flash for.... Yea iphones are expensive but they are still better than the blackberries and nokia smartphones. I got my iphone knowing i was going to jailbreak it, adding fuctionality and getting the most out of the OS running on it. If you paid the money to get an iphone of course you have expectations, (fair ones if you did some research before spending your money); My suggestion is take some responsability for your happiness, learn something new, and make this great phone work for you....... You idiot you can't watch south park on without a flash player. Know what you're talking about before you waste a post.

Apples customer service convinced me to buy a pc. I dropped my phone and the screen broke, now there's a great marketing technique, make the screen glass so it breaks easier then don't cover it in insurance and force peole to buy a new phone. I'm fixing it myself for cheap though. The people at the apple store are jerks though. One of them tells me he will sell me a new phone for half price cus I broke mine a month after having it then I go back in to buy it and they tell me they never heard of that deal. I told them now that Im buying a pc cus dealing with the issues of windows is way easier and less stressful than the assholes at apple

Comments by Seattle504 : Sunday, August 09, 2009 at 10:44 AM

I'm sure it's bandwidth related. Can you imagine tens of milllions of iPhones streaming 30 minute tv shows at the same time? Wow, did I say millions? I wonder who these millions of idiots were that purchased these darn things wihout Flash.

You can purchase and sync a lot of your precious movies and tv shows with Itunes. I'm sure Apple and Att
would rather you do this. Last I checked, Southpark was on itunes (idiot from earlier). You just have to pay for it like your supposed to.

And I know what you flash fanboys are thinking. Get flash and you get porn. Get a life.

Comments by Kyle : Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 05:30 AM

This sucks! I'm so disappointed. It smells like some kind of proprietary issue. I think they intentionally do not have it. Maybe b/c YouTube is buddies with iPhone, but vimeo requires flash.

It's frustrating bc lots of websites require it!!!! And I'm not convinced that it's too hard for them to figure out.

Comments by Jesse : Thursday, September 03, 2009 at 08:17 AM

A lot of valid points. One I think may be true was the one that suggested Apple wasn't releasing it because they want to string customers for as long as possible. The other point I think might be true is bandwidth.

Apple had video camera technolgy they could have installed in the 3G but held out to create another iPhone frenzy, they would "surprise" everyone with the "new" feature to have everyone want the newer version instead. They have a whole lotta stuff but they hope we're not smart enough to see and know what they are doing. IS THIS AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN ADOBE AND IPHONE FOR PROFIT?

Hmmm, who would most want us not to download massive data files over their fragile data network. . .?

And youtube is okay but oh well looks like im gonna have to live w/o flash for now.... And i dont think all this complaining will help either and im still having fun with my phone the apps are nice and if i cant watch anything y not just play something? Theres alot more than just watching videos on the iphone....

No flash player, no picture sending through texting, the bluetooth doesn't recieve neither sends data, creating ringtones is a pain in the ass the first time, the battery life is short( or is it relativity) time passing on fast when using my iphone.... Sucks ass!!!!! I suggest for all of you who like movies to get an mp4 converter on your pc and convert then load the movies to your iphone.

You can fix this by getting a Palm Pre.

The whole flash too slow issue story is a big lie from Apple. The thing is that the flv format is just a container, and inside it are an mp4 or h.264 movie and an AAC or mp3 soundtrack. These formats are already supported on the iphone. I suspect that the only reason Apple holds back flv support is fear of loosing movie market share. This might very well backfire.

I think the reason we don't have flash is because Apple is in bed with YouTube. The Apple pigs want us to purchase music and videos through their iTunes store. It's completely possible if other smartphones can do it. All boils down to money. Just how apple wouldn't let us text pics or video. My ancient razor even did all that. Apple only allows what they want to allow. They are big greedy brother. And what difference does it make if guys want to view porn. This smartphone should be able to do that too.

Well there is no need to be rude. I'm just saying they way I see it an apple device is much better than a pc, and no one made yall buy the iphones. I love mine even without the flashplayer and it's not all steve job's fault you know.
