Auto Bailout Failure Sparks Alabama vs. Michigan Rivalry

alabama vs. michigan

Welcome to America's second civil war- a war of words between Alabama and Michigan, featuring Joe Babiasz vs. Richard Shelby in place of Ulysses S. Grant vs. Robert E. Lee

It started with the debate over the bailout of Detroit's Big 3 automakers-Ford,GM and Chrysler.

In response to Alabama Senator Richard Shelby's opposition to the proposed legislation, former GM worker Joe Babiasz's created the site boycottalabamanow.com. My post about Babiasz's site led to some of the most passionate comments I've read since our post regarding  Pepsi's downsize to the 8-pack.

The senate's recent 52-35 vote against the proposal should add to the tension between the two states. At this rate, the rivalry  could spread to  a  Midwest vs. the South conflict, and ultimately, the Big 10 versus the Southeastern Conference.(We know how much you love your college football)

I always enjoy a healthy and constructive debate, so tell us your thoughts about the latest developments and the potential impact. Remember, some of America's most important laws were a created as a result of civil discourse.

(30) Thoughts on Auto Bailout Failure Sparks Alabama vs. Michigan Rivalry

I now deeply regret donating to Hurricane Katrina relief. I pray that another Cat 5 storm slams the Gulf Coast and Alabama gets what it deserves.

A copy of an email sent from ? to someone and/or some republicans in the senate was read by Ron Gettelfinger today. It was encouraging senators to vote against the auto loans as a way to get even with the UAW. It says they now have their chance and should take it. An interview with Senator McConnel on NPR further proves that this group of Senators had an agenda....busting the union. It was a personal agenda and they did not care about what was in the best interest of our country and to our economy as a whole. This is corruption. These Senators should be investigated and punished. These Senators also made demands upon the UAW at the last minute in which they were full aware could not be done immediately. These men are vicious and un-American.

Those southern senators were out to bust unions and get even with the UAW. So what happens to other people or organizations who supported Democratic candidates? Will they hunt them down and persecute them too? Sounds like it. Isn't this criminal? Oh wait, like hunting down escaped slaves...yes massah...watch out for the whipping post!

When the south faces water shortages - not one drop of Great Lakes Water for them.

Comments by Eddie Pop : Friday, December 12, 2008 at 03:30 PM

We don't want your crappy water anyways, and we'll be fine if another hurricane comes. Hahaha...you guys are idiots. Please promise me you will make good on your little boycott and NOT come visit our state!

Screw Michigan.

The entire bailout situation has nothing to do with either the people of Alabama or the fine people of the state of Michigan. It is about handing taxpayers from across our geat nation's money to large companies that have mismanaged their businesses.I personally know of at least a dozen local companies where I live and you probably do too that are having a hard time during the current financial recesion. The only way that it would be proper to make these so called loans, is for the companies to restructure and if means cutting wages and trimming fat, then so be it
.Also every business owner in America should recieve financial help in a properly proportioned amount.I have personally cut my budget by several hundreds of dollars monthly over the last few months.I don't like it and would rather have been able to have all the luxuries and conviences as I had a year ago, but reality is that we are in a financial reccession and we all have to tighten our belts to get through these times.I have made approximately 70 per cent of what I made in 2007.I do not feel like I should have to go through scarifices I am while my tax dollars pay for someone else to be able to continue the lifesyle.I read one comment earlier where one guy was crying about his kids not having a Christmas because of the bailout not being passed.Well first of all, ALL of us are going to have to settle for having less this Christmas and secondly, that person should have not waited until a week and a half before Christmas to make arrangements to provide for his children's Christmas. Now we can stand tall together as Americans and say ,ok lets back up and make what sacrifices are necesssary and get our companies back on track by cutting waste and manage what we do have in a more efficient way , or we can whine because someone else will not bail us out.The man who started this website is arrogant and for some reason has chosen one state to blaim on what 81 per cent of the nation has voted on.But that is ok.If it makes him feel better. The great State of Alabama has auto manufactures, textile, agricultures,Steel mills, electrical production, timber and sawmills, our own water and natural gas and most anything we need to supply our needsWE will survive without a few snowbirds renting our unused condos during the winter months. So if you feel that not coming to our great state will cause us not to survive, that is your choice.Florida,North and South Carolina are nice places for you to go on vacation. Most of the people whinging about wanting the bailouts are overpaid and retired workers who have more money than the average American Already. Most of us do not have enough money to leave for 3 to four months out of the year and vactaion. It is up to you- Cut the fat or live with the consequences.

Go ahead and throw your fit I have bought a dozen new cars that are from the big 3-Guess what I will not buy anymore. I will buy the Southern made cars are nothing. Michigan tourists throw fits all the time cause they are cheap and want to travel first class for nothing at our expense. Go ahead and stay home that will keep them out of the fast lane going 45 mph in a 70 zone.

when I go to the vicksburg ms. battlefield park , and see where my ancestors fought i realize why i get so upset when a yankee makes a derogatory remark toward us southerners. I look across the battlefield, and can see a big fine marble memorial to the state of michigan. My ancestors fought with the 23nd alabama, and held their ground on the south end of the defense around vicksburg. I have been upset for over 100 yrs to see what the north under Grant did to us. Not to mention Sherman. most of you northerners would say get over it. so now you big union employees want us to buy your union made junk... no way.... we say union boys just GET OVER IT....

Of course nasty Shelby voted no!!
Why wouldn’t this inbred vote against it when his state of Alabama rakes in a $1.61 in federal taxes for every $1.00 they send to Washington. Not to mention how many times have we had to rebuild the rich Gulf Shores coast line? Over and over we have rebuilt hurricane ravished Alabama! Stop rebuilding on right the damn coast you stupid hill billies or pay to fix it yourselves! The blue states have been funding the south for years! Time to turn off the feed trough! I already contacted my Senators demanding my tax dollars stop funding these half wit inbreeds from the south! No wonder they can give tax breaks to the transplant factories because states like Michigan are FUNDING THEM! DUH!

Here is a map showing how all the southern red states are feeding off the northern blue states! Red states might not like paying taxes but they have no problem using them up! You hill billies sure talk a big game! If you hate us some much why don't you pull your inbred rear ends away from the benefits trough????

Awwwww did Grant spank papa and mama who were siblings! HAHAHA~

It is a shame that we cannot help each other out. All we want is a loan. GM has a contract with the UAW that will free GM of the health care cost and cut wages to $14.00/hr. We just need a little help to get there. It's a loan that we have a plan to pay back. We are just hard working everyday people that just want a break. Instead we are subjected to all kinds of insults and put downs. I get upset but there must be some common ground. Can't we help each other out. Michigan will shut down and then we'll move to Alabama. I hope you welcome our people. Will you??

Comments by Eddie Pop : Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 12:54 PM

I'd rather be homeless than move to the south! Alabama is a state that supported Bush for a second term by what 40 points! Doesn't that tell you the mentality of the state?

Comments by GreatLakeBoy : Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 02:27 PM

Ok people, it is time you all take a breath and realize, that hurling insults is the tactics of a 4th grader, please behave like adults and find some reasonable basis for your argument.

The big 3 have certainly made mistakes, however, without the Huge oversight on Wall STreet to which the government responded by tossing them 750billion dollars with no strings or restrictions, the big 3 would still be doing just fine.

Imagine your paycheck being cut by 50% (sales down by 50%) over the last 6 months and nearly that much for the last 18months. HOw much of your debt would be getting paid off?

Now because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made billions of sub-prime mortgages to people who should not have qualified, who then began defaulting, which left them holding property without value to support it, the spiral began. Credit has dried up and most people I know can't buy a car without it, voila, this brings us to 2008. However, if we don't cure it, and provide the LOAN, which will also provide us with interest income (won't have to come from the taxpayers for a change), the 1930's will look like Jackpot City on payday!!!!!

Comments by Robin : Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 03:25 PM

No I am tired of funding fail! Why can't these people who are saying screw Michigan, screw GM, screw UAW take care of their own state??? A $1.61 for ever $1.00??? Give me a break! Let's end this NOW! Enough income redistribution! Let those transplants take care of Alabama that they love so much!

I'm sure you fat cat politicans enjoy riding around in your Cadillac or Lincoln Limo and bashing the Bailout. Go Ahead and continue and you will end up in a cheaply made Toyota or Nissan Limo if they even make such a thing. My Girlfriend Is from Tennessee and when I met her she owned a Nissan. I Made Her trade it in on a Chevrolet Impala because I was Just to embarrased to be seen in a Rice Rocket. Foreign cars are garbage and now I see so are the people That make them. Piss on Alabama and Shelby

Alabama is a Part of AMERICA so they should be supporting AMERICAN cars. Should we start refering to Alabama as Little Tokyo? Senator Shelby takes it in the ass by Japs on capitol hill (and I hope He Reads This). I woild like to meet him so I could tell him where to go. Down With Cheaply Made Foreign Cars. If thats what you want to build and drive, GO LIVE IN JAPAN. We Don't Need You.

Comments by Proud To Be From Michigan : Monday, December 15, 2008 at 01:07 PM

Chrysler was once a significant portion of the Alabama economy. However, Chrysler decided to become a foreign (German) company and sold off their US military defense businesses. Once foreign owned, they refused to use the Chrysler component suppliers in Alabama for their Alabama Diamler-Benz Assembly plant. They then sold off all their component manufacturing to foreign electronics companies which have now shipped all the jobs to Mexico. However, Honda, Hyundi, Benz, and other foreign car companies have built plants in Alabama. I wonder which segment of the industry, foreign or domestic, has more constituents for Sen. Shelby to represent? I wonder? Maybe the unions should wake up before the next contract negotiations in 2011.

Even so, I will not be voting for him again.

Well, I must say...I've been completely outmatched in this battle of wits...racist, hillbilly, freeloader, wannabe frat boy, and someone who takes it in the a....you Northerners are just downright charming people, and don't let anybody else tell you otherwise.

Anyways, it's ironic how in the same thread people criticize the south for being Republicans and Bush-lovers.

And yet, it is BUSH and the White House who are going to give the loan money to the big 3, not the Democratic Congress.

Better not bite the hand that feeds you...

Does Bush have any choice? He is already a two time recession prezzy! He doesn't want the collapse of the domestic auto on his lame ass!

I find it so funny the little rice ride lovers in that state don't want to fund "fail" Yet they got their hands out for all that extra federal tax dollars stuffing their backward ass self on the benefits buffet! I have too been to Alamaba and well what do you need to say for a state that carried Bush for a second term by what 40 points? Doesn't really sum it up for you? They'd have voted for Bush again if they could have! Damn it. Can we succeed the union?????

Haha That's all you got out of that article! Some times the truth does hurt~

Comments by GreatLakeBoy : Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 12:31 PM

@GreatLakeBoy: First of all your precious little tax map from 2004 has more non-southern states in the "top ten takers" than southern states, regardless of red or blue. So it really doesn't support your argument. Good try though.

Second, the term is "secede" not "succeed". The South is home to the oldest public universities and the nation's first colleges for women. Come on down and enroll in one.
Also, it was New England states that proposed the idea of secession due to their opposition of the Louisiana Purchase.

But AGAIN, the North proposed secession during the War of 1812 when they wanted to trade with England (who was the enemy at the time).

And the only state to have a debate over secession (yet AGAIN) presided over by their LT. Governor in 2005: Vermont.

So really get over the whole secession thing. The rest of the country moved on long ago.

@dave: Racist? The first successful black politicians on the national stage were Southerners. The first two Jewish U.S. Senators were Southerners. How is that for racist?

Also, in the context of Michigan car companies and racism, don't forget that it was GM and Ford that funded and fueled Hitler's initial invasion of Poland so he could kill a bunch of folks. In the 1940's top level GM execs were still getting "distinguished service" medals from the Nazis...

@Proud Yankee: Yes, slavery was wrong. No one argues that. Also, no one argues that Profits from the slave trade stayed in the North and that a majority of the slave ships were owned and run by Northern companies. The South was guilty of buying slaves, but it was Northern companies that made an industry of kidnapping, transporting and selling them. Shameful on both sides.

In history, there is enough blame to go around. Many of the US troops fighting in WWII were killed by Germans riding and flying in Ford and Opel (100% Ford owned) military vehicles and planes. So, please, no more of this "the South is un-American" crap. You just sound ignorant.

It's time to face the facts. The Big 3 car companies have kicked ass for decades, operating in a free-market economy. They rocked. But now, due to poor leadership, bad decisions, antiquated business thinking, they are failing, in that same free-market economy. So quit the whining, suck it up and make the tough decisions to get our car companies back on track.

Don't turn and take the freaking bailouts and government money.
It's the same handouts that @GreatLakeBoy tries to slam poor Southern folks for taking.

Comments by in the South : Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 03:52 AM

That map clearly shows the north east funding the south east! Sorry to see you failing so bad. We have moved on? There as big talk about in 2000 when Bush stole the election and there's still hope to get away from you twits in the south! Trust me!

Actually succeed will work just fine sorry to see you failing so bad~

Stop income redistribution to the red states! Red states complain about taxes but not when they're using them!

Secede, succeed, break away, get way or what ever the F you want to call it, NOW! JUST SAY NO TO THE MOOCHERS!

Big difference in the @ss is the Big 3 wants loans and the south just wants! So many ways to fail! haha
