'Windows Live' Search Is Dying
Microsoft updated its search user interface by moving from MSN Search to Windows Live in November, and boy is it having an effect on search traffic.Just not the kind of impact that Microsoft would like.
According to Nielsen/Netratings, the number of searches on MSN/Live search decreased by 12 percent in November compared to last year. Now getting smaller while web traffic is growing is bad enough, but Google grew by more than 30 percent during the same time, and Yahoo was up by 27 percent.
So Microsoft should probably give up the thought of ever catching up with Yahoo or Google in search traffic. Yahoo Search gets nearly three times the volume of Microsoft, and Google is knocking on the door of having 50 percent of all search traffic.
Microsoft's search algorithm still needs work. I wanted to see what Microsoft's Live team was saying about itself, so I searched Live with the string "windows live" blog. The Windows Live blog wasn't on the first page of results!!! But when I searched Google and Yahoo with the same query, the Windows Live blog was the top answer.
So there's your answer, Microsoft.
