Mashable Passes TechCrunch in Subscribers

According to Feedburner Mashable.com has 4 times as many subscribers then our friends at TechCrunch. Ok, well they really didn't surpass them, I just wanted to give the TechCrunchers a scare. We've seen this before with the Feedburner issue showing 1 million subscribers on the Feedburner widget, and I assume like last time we will be hearing from our Feedburner friend Rick pretty soon.

This made me think about this question, Will anyone surpass TechCrunch, or will we have to wait till Web 3.0 for the new leader to step up?

Geez, am I really that predictable? Could be worse, I suppose. ;)

Anyhow, this isn't directly related to the spoofing that happened in September, more of an "is it our job to interpret another service's reported numbers" issue. In other words, when a centralized service tells us they have x subscribers, we generally don't try to monkey with that number to determine if it's actually x - 1 million.

That said, we do provide additional insight for publishers who care to know such things - "reach" is an attempt to determine the unique number of people who view or click on an item on a given day. So while someone's subscriber number (based on our own analytics when it involves stand-alone applications, and the numbers given to us by web-based services) may be higher than expected, the reach number will be a more "accurate" number of the actual number of people interacting with the feed's content.

Rick, Excuse my ignorance here, but I always beleived the feedburner badge represented the supposed number of subscribers to a site's feedburner feed (with the variations of course). But in some cases it is a site's "reach"? How do you guys determine this? Or am I completely confused! thanks for your help clarifying it

Evan - The badge is the subscriber number. Sorry if I confused the issue there; I simply pointed out that we have other measurements that will help a publisher take fluctuations into account by looking at other data that will help better understand how many people are actually reading/clicking on items in the feed.

ok ok that makes sense now. As a feedburner user I have looked into the other areas to help determine "reach". With this post i was merely pointing out how the subscriber number for mashable was 410,000, which seemed kinda high :)
