PSP Becomes Media Reader

With its recent software update, the PlayStation Portable is becoming more of an all around media device. In addition to the primary functions of game play, movie viewing, and web browsing, you can now use the PSP to listen to podcasts and Windows Media Audio files.

Today Sony says it is considering adding an RSS reader so that consumers can get their daily digest of news and blogs while on the go.

Adding an RSS reader would give the PSP a leg up on the iPod and Windows Portable Media Centers. Web browsing via RSS on portable devices is a convenient way to stay connected to the latest happenings. Mobile phone users are plugging into RSS feeds through software such as FreeNews, so these devices should follow their lead.

More importantly for Sony, an RSS feed channel would be a great marketing vehicle. Sony should create a "new release" RSS feed to distribute descriptions of game and video titles as they are released, as well as special promotions. I wouldn't be surprised if RSS readers appeared on a variety of handheld entertainment devices within the year.
