Kelsey Group ILM 2005 Keynote Speech

So I'm sitting here at the Kelsey Group's ILM 2005 [interactive local media] conference listening to the introduction speech by John Kelsey, patriarch of the Kelsey Group. A couple notes from his introductory speech that caught my ear.

1.) Search is the 2nd most popular internet service only to email. Email is the most popular service used online but it's followed up by search.
my thoughts: search will always be popular because it's demand pull and based on what you're looking for rather than what others want you to be looking for.

2.) He gave a kick ass introduction to my friend Greg Sterling. IMHO, Greg is the lifeblood of Kelsey and although he has a great supporting cast, Greg is the star and I think everyone in the room knows that.

3.) Local search has grown by leaps and bounds over the past year. It's changing faster than local business behaviour and there are new local search apps being launched every day and the local SMB's and SME's [brick and mortar] are having a hard time keeping up with it. I smell opportunity for an ambitious consulting firm in this niche... anyone wanna step up to the plate?

Local Search Reach
1.) 84% of internet users have gone online to find local information
2.) 43% of search engine users are seeking a local merchant to buy something offline. Note: source of this is iCrossing so I don't trust that factor
3.) 54% of internet users have substituted local search online for using the traditional yellow pages. This is one I do believe and think it may even be understated.
4.) 52% of SMB's are not aware of local geotargeted search. Of the 48% that are aware, nearly half are not planning on using it because they're confused by it and just don't get it.

So I'm seeing a lot of opportunity here for someone to step up to the plate and be a local search expert consultant extraordinaire but I can tell you it ain't gonna be me. More updates from the conference will be posted through Thursday afternoon.
