VideoEgg & TypePad Strike A Deal

VideoEgg & TypePad Buddy UpEarlier this week I told you about a deal that would be announced Tuesday and then I didn't follow up on that deal. Needless to say I've had a few things occupying my time as of late, one of which is the forming of a new startup. Yes, that´s right, I'm putting together a new startup, that will hopefully knock your socks off and it´s taking up a ton of time but everthing is going according to plan. I´ll talk more about it in the not so distant future, but for right now we´re keeping a tight lid on the box so as not to show our hand too quickly. But the only thing that has to to with the Video Egg / TypePad deal is that I didn´t have time to post about it because I was in meetings all day Tuesday and I figured the blogosphere would be all over it, but yet again, they've let me down. The only place that really picked up on it was PCWorld, now what does that say about the blogosphere, shame shame.

So VideoEgg is going to provide TypePad [a SixApart company] users with the ability to upload videos to their blogs. Now VideoEgg isn´t the only company doing something like this. My buddy Eric Rice´s company, audioblog, does that as well. But the difference is VideoEgg is only focusing on video, I´m tempted to say that´s a good thing but you never know. Here are a few snippets from the press release that went out Tuesday.
“VideoEgg, Inc., a leading innovator in web-based video publishing solutions, today announced a major step forward in making video blogging simpler, by integrating its signature offering, The VideoEgg Publisher, into Six Apart Ltd.'s TypePad service, currently one of the most popular blog platforms on the market. The VideoEgg Publisher is a Web-based video publishing technology that makes it easy for users to capture, encode, upload, and share online video...

...For the first time, TypePad users can painlessly upload videos to their TypePad blog without the headaches of encoding formats, export settings, incompatible player versions, long uploads, or complicated video software.”

So I think it´s pretty cool and I predict we´ll see more entries by startups into the video publishing / tv over ip world. [as if we haven't seen them surge out of the woodwork already].

Ranking Blog Posts - How Long Does It Take?

Time Before A Blog Post Ranks WellSo over a year and a half ago I began working on some blog research geared towards determining how long it takes for a blog entry to rank well in the SERPS [search engine results pages]. At the time the technical definition of a blog was even less clear than it is today so I abandoned my research figuring I´d revisit it at some later date. Well I decided to peak into some of that again and thought I´d give you a real world example from right here on mshift.

You´ll remember that last week I posted an interview I had with SVP of Jingle Networks [Free 411] Tom Latinovich. I thought I´d share a little bit of data with him about what terms his post was getting traffic for from natural search results. So I did a little digging using a proprietary tool [can´t touch this] that gives me the traffic from natural results as well as the page / position each visitor clicked on. So I did a little digging and here´s what I uncovered.

When Did The Post Page Get Natural Traffic?
The post was put up midday October 20th and natural search rankings for the topics covered in the Free411 post began coming in around noon of the following day.
“It´s important to note that the traffic from natural search results were being sent to the homepage of mshift and not to the post page itself.”

The specific Free411 Interview post didn´t begin receiving traffic until today. That's a little less than 6 days from the day the post was actually published on the site. So basically the mshift homepage began ranking for the targeted terms within 24 hours but the post page didn´t begin ranking for approximately 6 days after the date the post was originally put up.

Are Blogs Found In Google News Different?
My guess is that they are indeed different. Mshift is not listed in Google News or any other news site for that matter so we're not given the "instant credibility" that sites like SERoundtable enjoy. However, we´re not complaining either. Because our homepage ranks for the topics of our posts even though none of those keywords are found in the title, keyword or description of the mshift homepage. I believe Google is throwing us a little bit of traffic to the homepage instead of the post page because it´s just part of their core algorithm. Google returns more homepages rather than subpages because it adds credibility to their index and when entrepreneurs and CEOs search for their name they're interested in seeing the main site they're found on, rather than just the subpage.

Blog Ranking Time Conclusion
Basically if you´re not in the sandbox, you´re not employing sneaky deaky tactics to outfox Google or the other engines, then you should see something similar to the amount of time it takes a typical mshift blog post to rank well.

If you have feedback feel free to ping us with your data. One quick sidenote, the floodgates will be open soon and this model of taking time to rank a particular blog will move to realtime. Some people I know will probably be the first and only ones to release anything like it for some time :) Man I love what I do!

VideoEgg Interview & Partnership Announcement

VideoEgg News & Inside Scoop Coming Tomorrow Who loves ya? Tomorrow, VideoEgg, a company that offers web-based video publishing solutions which make it easy to for internet users to encode, upload, host and watch video is rumored to announce a big partnership. And who is the only blogger that has an exclusive interview lined up with Kevin Sladek, one of the company's co-founders? You guessed it, MarketingShift!

I can't say a whole lot about the partnership announcement but I can say it is going to turn a lot of heads and make a lot of folks realize a new market they didn't really realize existed. One of my friends is in a similar space but because his product line segmentation is not quite as focused as VideoEgg, he hasn't gotten a ton of attention but he has gotten a bit of venture capital funds recently.

Ok, I've already said too much, but stay tuned cause tomorrow I'll show you a new area to direct your marketing research and ad spend.

Hurricane Wilma Hitting Merritt Island Now

Hurricane Wilma is in Merritt Island, Florida now but we're fine.
Well, we will always have hurricanes and Wilma is just the one hovering over us today. I'm quite amazed to see how many people didn't board up their houses this time. You see, a category 3 hurricane doesn't really phase us seasoned hurricane veterans. So if I seem slow to respond today it's just because there's another hurricane hovering over my house, it's nothing personal.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say we're all fine. I think Finley's actually taking a nap as the 70mph winds rip out yet another hibiscus bush and bring a bit more rain in the attic than I would prefer but at least someone's getting some sleep.

Rebirth of Froogle

Froogle Is Reborn
Everyone has heard of Froogle, Google's inept shopping search engine thingy, that I consider Google's first failure (followed by Failure #2). There was a lot of excitement when Froogle was first launched because people believed it would be the ultimate deal finder which it turned out to be anything but that. With a clunky interface, crowded results page and with less then great prices, Froogle never really amounted to much. Well just yesterday Google sneakily gave Froogle a well needed facelift in hopes to revive its struggling entity and compete with the likes of Shopping.com, Bizrate.com and others. I haven't had a chance to dig into how helpful the results actually are in comparison to previous versions, which is where the real test will be, but cosmectically its a big improvement.

Here are a few differences that I noticed:

First notice is the results page looks like a combination of a SERP from Google and your typical comparison engine. Next you will notice the Adwords Sponsored links are placed across the top of the page instead of crowding the page down the right hand side. This change alone makes the page and products descriptions much more user friendly.

Google has also moved from the text links to an actually compare prices button, another feature common among typical price shopping engines. Maybe the best feature of all is that the search query you enter actually returns the product you are looking for! What a novel idea!

Google could potential really put pressure on the other comparison engines, if they decide to evolve Froogle even more.
